You will also need your permit for 6 months before you can obtain your M1 endorsement.

No, you do not need to have a permit nor a driver's license. But it is best to have a learner's permit for a car license before taking the motorcycle course. If you don't have a permit or license, you must show proof that you completed the classroom portion of driver's ed. All you need is a valid government-issued photo ID card. For example: A passport, State ID, or Driver's License from any country. All students will be required to obtain a car license before they can turn in the paperwork that is received after completing the motorcycle class. Motorcycle licenses DO NOT STAND ALONE. In CA, if you are 21 and over, you can take the written test at the DMV to get your permit test if you want before taking the course but it is not necessary. ​

In Arizona, both the written and riding tests may be waived. In California, only the riding test may be waived. You will still be required to take the written test. If you are under 21, you have to wait to take the written test until you have completed for safety course. If you are 21 and over, you can take the written test at any time.

You must be at least 15 1/2 years old. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent come to the first night of class with you to sign the waiver. If you do have have your driver's license yet and you are under 18 years of age, you must also have the written portion of the driver's ed for a car license completed before taking the class. In Arizona, if you are under 18 years of age, you will have a permit for 6 months. In California, you can not get a permit if you're under 21 until you complete the Motorcyclist Training Course (MTC). Then you will have your permit for 6 months or until your 21st birthday, whichever occurs first, before you can obtain your M1 endorsement.

In Arizona, classes are usually held twice a month. ​ Advance classes in Arizona are held based on demand. In California: Classes in San Diego run most weekends with occassional weekday classes. Classes in San Marcos are usually held every weekend. Classes in El Centro are held twice a month. ​ Advance classes in California are held once a month in San Marcos and every other month in San Diego. Beginner: In Arizona, it is 14 hours total (4 hours classroom and 10 hours riding) split up over 2-3 days and possibly over 1 or 2 weekends. In California it is 16 hours total (6 hours classroom and 10 hours riding). 2 Day Weekend Classes are all day Saturday and Sunday ​ 3 Day Classes are Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. ​ Weekday classes are all day Monday and Tuesday ​ Intermediate: In Arizona, it is 4-5 hours total (no classroom). ​ In California it is 7-8 hours total (Classroom and riding will alternate throughout the day). ​ Advance: In California it is 8-9 hours total (Classroom and riding will alternate throughout the day). Skills: In California skills classes are 4 hours of riding. 3 Wheel: It is 4 hours total (1 hour Classroom and 3 hours riding)

Beginner: For the riding portion of the class, you must wear: a long sleeve shirt or jacket Long Sturdy pants - either jeans or khaki material- no holes, flare, nylon, sweats, or yoga pants Full finger gloves (leather or motorcycle specific) sturdy boots that cover the ankle, no canvas running shoes or sandals (Examples of acceptable footwear are hiking boots, riding boots, or cowboy boots) The rule of thumb is "no skin below the chin." You will also need a valid government-issued photo ID as proof of identification. Examples include: Driver's license, passport, and international ID. Expired ID's will not be accepted, unless you are military. School IDs will also not be accepted. We provide the motorcycles. We also can loan a helmet if necessary. Anyone under the age of 18, in California and Arizona, need to have a parent present on the first night of class to sign waivers, or the waivers can be notarized. In Arizona or California, a scooter can be used for the course. We DO NOT provide them, so you would need to provide your own.

In Arizona, the cost is $270 for the Basic Rider Course for all ages. Payment is due at the time of registration. AMSAF scholarships are available on a seasonal basis. ​ In Arizona, the cost of the Basic Rider Course 2 for all ages is $120. AMSAF scholarships are available on a seasonal basis. In California, the cost is $350 for the Motorcyclist Training Course for ages 21 and over. The cost for riders from the age of 15 1/2 to 20 is $295 per CMSP mandate. Payment is due at the time of registration. Ask about the Biggs Harley Davidson American Heroes Program that is ran on a seasonal basis. In Californai, the cost is $50 for the Can Am Spyder 3 wheel course. ​ In California, the cost is $225 for the Intermediate Riding Clinic. We offer discounts for previous students. ​ In California, the cost is $375 for the Advanced Riding Clinic Level 1 and Level 2. We offer discounts for previous students. In California, the cost is $150 for Skills classes. Skills are offered for students who have already taken: the Intermediate Riding Clinic, the Advanced Riding Clinic Level 1 and/or Level 2.

There will be no refunds after the first day of class. If you don’t show up for the first class and are marked as a “no-show”, you will be required to pay full price to schedule another class. Class start times are firm. If you are late for class or miss any classroom section or range exercise you will be dropped from the class and required to reschedule for an additional cost of $100. To reschedule or cancel your registration without incurring a $100 rescheduling fee you MUST notify us by the end of the business day 1 week prior to your scheduled start date. For example, classes starting on Friday need to be cancelled by the end of the day on the Friday before your class. Rescheduling or cancelling within 1 week of your class start time will incur a $100 rescheduling fee. There is a $20 cancellation fee if cancelled 1 week prior to your scheduled start date. If you are dropped from the class at any time for any reason, there is a $100 fee to reschedule. If you are dropped from class or fail a test, call the office to reschedule; we will not contact you. If you participated in the American Heroes program and were late to the first class or did not show up, you forfeit any payment already made and you will be charged the remaining balance of the cost of the class. All above points are applicable regardless of your payment amount or program.

Passing the course is not guaranteed, but most riders who take the course will pass. In California: Once you pass the beginner course, you will be mailed a DL 389 within 10 days or you can pick up your DL 389 at Biggs. THE CERTIFICATE IS NOT GIVEN AT THE COMPLETION OF CLASS. You will need to take this form to the DMV. This form may waive the riding portion of the test in order to obtain your M1 endorsement if you are over 21. You will still be required to take the written test. We suggest reading the DMV handbook before taking the written test. If you are under 21, you will need the form to get your permit. You will still be required to take the written test. You will need your permit for 6 months or until your 21st birthday, before you can obtain your M1 endorsement. You will also receive a completion card. This card can be used to get a discount by most motorcycle insurance companies. IVMT is not responsible for your state's licensing requirements. In Arizona: Once you pass the course, you will be handed a completion card before you leave class. You will need to take this card to the MVD. The card may waive the riding and written portion of the test in order to obtain your M1 endorsement if you are over the age of 18. If you are under 18, you will get your permit, which you will need to have for 6 months before you are allowed to get your M1 endorsement. IVMT is not responsible for your state's licensing. For Advance classes in both states, you will only receive a completion card. This could get you more discounts on your insurance.

If you fail the classroom or riding test, you are allowed one (1) retest. The re-test must be completed within 60 days of your original test date. If your score is low enough, you can retest for free. If your score is high, we will recommend coming back for all of Sunday or both riding days to ride before you retest. This option is open to everyone and has a $100 reschedule fee to enroll in class. Paying the $100 will secure a seat for all riding sessions. As a second option, you can be on a standby list to be called on Saturday if we have an open seat. This would be on a last minute basis and you would only be allowed to ride the second day before testing. The cost for this option is $60. During the fall, there are opportunities to have private lessons with the instructor.
